Rhythms Along the River: Live Music and the RiverArts Series
One of Moorhead’s most beloved ongoing events is RiverArts, hosted by Moorhead Parks & Recreation at Viking Ship Park. It’s a weekly opportunity to enjoy live music, artist demonstrations, children’s activities, yard games, food trucks, and a chance to gather with neighbors outdoors. Featuring headlining performances typically 6–8 pm, RiverArts blends local culture with scenic views of the Red River.‡
Galleries & Classrooms: Where Art and Learning Meet
Moorhead is home to several institutions pushing boundaries and fostering dialogue. The Diederich Art Gallery at Minnesota State University Moorhead hosts juried student shows, public lectures, and exhibits featuring regional and national artists. All offerings are free and open to the public—making art accessible to everyone.‡
The Hjemkomst Center, operated by the Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County, combines heritage with contemporary exhibits—from the Stave Church replica to rotating displays that connect visitors with immigration stories and American cultural evolution.‡
Festivals that Define Community
No discussion of Moorhead’s arts scene is complete without highlighting Greater Moorhead Days. A tradition since 1950, it brings together parades, live music, Kids Fest, outdoor recreation, and community-wide celebrations of history and place.‡
Another pillar is Pangea: Cultivate Our Cultures, a celebration of cultural diversity through music, dance, food, and storytelling. It’s one of the region’s largest inclusive festivals, drawing participants and visitors who want to experience the world without leaving town.‡
Making Space for Local Creators
Beyond established institutions, Moorhead supports emerging artists through calls for submission. Events such as the Hidden Gallery Art Show and “Art Ghoullery IX” invite artists to explore imaginative themes, showcase their work, and connect with the community.
How to Join In
- Follow Moorhead Parks & Recreation and gallery social media for updates on shows and live performances.
- Visit Hjemkomst during Tuesday free-evening hours to enjoy exhibits at no cost.
- Apply to local calls for art if you’re an artist; many showcases embrace whimsical, unconventional, or emerging work.

Looking Ahead
Moorhead’s arts calendar is lively and expanding. With public art proposal opportunities, rotating exhibitions, and regular performances, the city is invested in developing spaces where art, culture, and community converge. Whether you’re here for an evening concert by the river or a monthly gallery opening, there’s a pulse of creativity waiting to be discovered.
