Moorhead City Council Ends Sanctuary City Discussions

After months of deliberation, the Moorhead City Council has concluded its discussions on adopting sanctuary city status. The decision came during a recent council meeting, where a 4-4 deadlock was broken by Mayor Shelly Carlson, effectively ending further exploration of a separation ordinance that would have limited the city’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The debate over the ordinance revealed deep divisions among council members. Council Member Deb White shared personal accounts of residents affected by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions, emphasizing the community’s concerns. In contrast, Council Member Lisa Borgen questioned the severity of the issue, stating that claims of a crisis were unfounded.

Despite the council’s decision to halt the ordinance, community groups plan to continue the conversation. A ‘huddle’ is scheduled for June to discuss the matter further, though details have yet to be announced. In the meantime, city leaders have focused on providing information and resources, with ICE-related materials now available on the city’s official website.
